Did you know that plastic bottles are outlasting whales — some of the longest living mammals on the planet.

Gooroo has partnered with Itza Media to promote conservation education and efforts. As part of the Learn to Save Our Planet initiative, discover the wonderful world of the magnificent whale. What’s more, uncover what you can do to help protect their environment.

In today’s blog, we explain how to take part in the initiative, what you’ll be learning, and what credentials you’ll earn along the way. Additionally, we give the lowdown on the incredible organisations involved who are raising awareness about environmental change.

What is a Whale Guardian?

A Whale Guardian is a curious learner who completes the Itza-collaborated course on our website. After you’ve tested your knowledge on what you’ve just learned, you’ll be able to proudly say that you’re an advocate for marine life.

What is the Course About?

Whales are incredible animals. They roam throughout the world’s oceans – from the equator all the way to the polar ice caps; can weigh up to 200 tonnes (around thirty times heavier than an african elephant); and use sound to communicate, sometimes over vast distances of hundreds of miles.

However, over the past 150 years, mankind has devastated whale populations. Commercial whaling, entanglement in fishing gear and global warming are among the many threats that endanger these gentle giants.

So, how can you get involved?

How to Earn the Credential

  1. First you need to register at itza.io/. Not only will this allow you to reap all the benefits of the course, but it will also give you access to other amazing conservation resources!
  2. Once the Learn to Save Our Planet initiative launches (November 1st), follow the link on the Whale Guardian page to the Gooroo website. Watch the course in its entirety and complete the quiz. Once you’re finished, return to Itza via the “Donate” button.
  3. Next, complete any other quizzes on the Itza site to earn your credential.
  4. But before that, help Gooroo decide where we should donate our $30,000 contribution.

Donate to a Conservation Initiative

Yes, that’s right — Gooroo has donated $30,000 to WWF conservation initiatives addressing the protection of whales and other marine life. By partaking in the challenge, you can help us decide where this money should go! Check out the possible charities and organisations.
