Refugee Day: What It Is and What It Recognises
Sunday, June 20th, marks World Refugee Day. As of mid-2020, there are 80 million forcibly displaced people world wide. But, what can we do to help them? In today’s blog, we’ll talk about the significance of the international day. Plus, everyday things we can do to help refugees in our countries.
What is World Refugee Day?
First established in 2001, this international day is designed to celebrate and honour refugees around the world. But, what is a refugee?
Well, generally speaking, they are a displace person who has crossed national boundaries. They cannot return home due to well-founded fear of persecution. The first modern definition came about following World War II, following the large numbers of people fleeing Eastern Europe.
Their Rights
The 1951 Refugee Convention is a United Nations treaty that defines who a refugee is. What’s more, it set out the right of individuals who are granted asylum, and the responsibilities of nations that grant asylum.
These nations must:
- provide identity papers and travel documents
- allow the transfer of assets
- give free access to courts
- respect personal status including rights related to marriage
- allow the possibility of assimilation and naturalisation
They shall not:
- discriminate against these individuals
- impose penalties on those who enter illegally if they present themselves without delay
- forcibly return them to the country they have fled from
What’s more, these displaced people are treated like nationals in relation to:
- freedom to practice their religion
- respect and protect of artistic right and industrial property
- rationing
- elementary education
- public relief and assistant
- labour legislation and social security
They are treated like non-nationals in relation to:
- moveable and immovable property
- right of associate in unions
- wage-earning employment
- self-employment
- housing
- education higher than elementary
- right to free movement and free choice of residence within the country
The Goal
World Refugee day aims to recognise the strength of those who have fled the conflict in their country in the hopes of a better life. Shining the light of the rights, needs, and dreams of displaced people, it seeks to mobilise resources so they not only survive but also thrive. It is an opportunity for everyone to experience, understand, and celebrate the rich diversity of the communities of refugees. Additionally, it provides a platform for them to be seen, listened to, and valued by the community that they are living in.
Together We Heal, Learn, and Shine
This year’s World Refugee Day theme centres around accessible healthcare, education, and recreation.
Healthcare. Medical support saves lives, but those seeking asylum don’t always have access to it. Especially in countries like the US which don’t have a universal health care plan. Make a donation.
Education. The building block for a better future, scholarships are awarded to young refugees so they can have access to a fulfilling education. Help fund one!
Recreation. Sort can enrich the lives of people forced to flee their homes. It boosts mental health and helps gain confidence, forge new friendships, and makes everyone feel welcome.
