After School in ASL
This club is taught utilising American Sign Language with closed captioning to allow students who are Deaf or hard of hearing access to fun, interactive and engaging content. Sign up for a little bit of everything from acting all the way to yoga! Your exciting hands-on curriculum aligns with foreign language standards instructed in conjunction with the New York State Standards.
ASL is a natural language that serves as the predominant sign language of Deaf communities in the United States and most of Anglophone Canada. It is a complete and organised visual language that is expressed by facial expression as well as movements and motions with the hands. Its users range from 250,000 to 500,000 persons.
At Gooroo, we’re big believers in accessible education. The addition of this new club sets us further down the path of providing hands-on standards-based learning to all.

Angela is a qualified Sign Language Interpreter with a passion for creativity and teaching. With 10 years of American Sign Language experience, she will guide you through exploring various creative outlets via the visual language of ASL.

Capture your favourite memories in one place with a Sentimental Book. This is a great way to save memories like plane tickets, photos, and birthday cards in an organised way. First, make a metallic cover. Then, continue to highlight special moments in your life by adding mementos to your sentimental book. Whether it’s family photos, tickets to a favourite movie, a flower from your garden, or an old recipe, there’s no limit to what you can include! Lastly, give your sentimental book a splash a colour by painting the pages you’ve created. Watercolour is an excellent and easy way to brighten any page — all you need is a little paint and water! Grab a brush and get started adding paint to your book.
You’ll need:
- old hardcover book
- paper mementos
- aluminum tape
- hot glue gun
- crafting tool
- a glue stick
- scissors
- watercolour paint
- water
- brushes
- markers
- stickers
Grab your glue gun and get sticking!
Other craft projects will include: melting crayon art, and constructing daruma dolls. Angela will also guided you in hula hooping, teach you the fundamentals of stage directions and acting, and guide you in stress-relieving yoga. All taught in ASL and with captions!
